Burney Le Boeuf is a retired professor of biology at UC Santa Cruz and studied elephant seals for more than twenty-five years. In 1983, after the building of the first depth recorder that could be attached to the seals, he studied their diving habits.

Warren Zapol head of anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital at the time of this writing and remains on the faculty of Harvard Medical School.
