To the reader: This issue of Science Notes is the first to be written, illustrated and designed exclusively for presentation on the World Wide Web. The writers and illustrators, all graduate students in the Science Communication Program, were encouraged to "go into the kitchen and break all the dishes" to put together their first -- highly experimental -- interactive stories. If you notice shards of crockery here and there, please grant these brave and entrepreneurial student writers and illustrators your indulgence. In any event, we'd love to have your comments.
